Appended below is an interesting chart of historical stock market performace during and after mid-term elections – courtesy of Liz Ann Sonders.

As you can see the average drawdown is 17%. This compares to an average drawdown of 14% annually going back to 1980.

However, the average gain off of the lows is 32%. Also, each 12 month period post the lows were positive.

While we are not forecasting this type of return in our current environment, this chart does offer a lesson on potential market moving headlines.
